After spending some time reading some blogs, talking to a couple bike shops, and chatting up a few friends who ride, I was feeling like I didn't have enough information to make a good purchase decision, so I bought this book. I'm about the same age as the author, and it sounded like my experience level matched his when he started his modern bicycle journey.

What I found is that my knowledge wasn't that far off, either. The knowledge base I had created for myself was roughly equivalent to that presented in the book, so I learned very little. If you're actively researching your bike already, and have been doing research through blogs, magazines, and talking to bike people, this book is probably not for you. If you have NOT begun researching your first bike, I strongly recommend this book. It's an easy read, and will give you a good foundation. If you already have a good foundation, it will NOT fill in the gaps.

One complaint I have is the photos presented in the book. There is text labeling bike parts in a couple of the photos, but the small white text on a black and white image is almost not legible.

Beginner Cyclist The Before You Buy Your Next Bike Guidebook eBook Mark Hancharuk Reviews

A little basic for me. This is a book best for true beginers. But I still learned some new info.
Good general information to aid in decision making
Concise, easy to read invaluable information for anyone who wants to get on a bike again. Loved the personal stories which are easy to relate to. Thanks !
Well written, no fuss style. Lots of good advice and, best of all, the author covers the basics on cycling jargon so you don't feel lost. Read this book BEFORE buying a bike.
This was a great introduction for a complete beginner to the world of modern bicycling and what is available. A few trips to my local bike store to ask questions had been mixed depending on the person helping me. As someone who likes to do their research and really understand a subject I'm getting involved with I found the technical information useful and the personal anecdotes quite entertaining and informative. I paired this book with a physical copy of the Knack Cycling for Everyone book which I found to be a great supplement for technical information and as a useful reference book.
This book is for the bicycle rider who got his first bike out of a "big box warehouse" and now considers to become a serious bicyclist, but oh my... with all the variety of styles, makes and models out on the market, one stands in awe and confusion and it can be a pain to make the right choice. This book offers some guidance about materials, bike types, styles, accessories, narrowing down the choice and helping to get the right bike for the intended purpose.
I am one of those first-time big box store bikers who had to make a choice... this book was entertaining, informative, and of help to make my decision.
After purchasing and reading Beginner Cyclist I began scouring sales ads online for bicyles. I now had a very good idea on what to look for in a bike. Being totally clueless before, my last purchases were mountain bikes from our local hardware store and last one from Walmart which I found cumbersome and uncomfortable not to mention hard pedaling. I had no idea about the fundamentals of bikes. After topping my tires to their maximum air pressure I was amazed at how much easier it was pedalling (and faster). Armed with the knowledge of what to look for in a bike from reading this book I was hooked on buying a higher end bike to see all the other benefits I was missing. After a couple weeks of looking I finally found what I wanted at an affordable price, checked it out and bought it. It was light weight with high pressure tires and pedalled like a dream. I changed the saddle and handle bars to suit my comfort. This book has taught me so much about bikes and is so easy to read and understand that I would highly recommend it to anyone intending to purchase their next bike new or used or even to increase the efficieny of their current bike. I am now riding my bike every day after work and loving it. What a difference a good bike makes. Thanks Mark
